Located in the province of Guanacaste, Costa Rica, Rincón de la Vieja National Park is one of the country’s most fascinating and diverse protected areas. Covering approximately 14,000 hectares (34,600 acres), this park is home to the Rincón de la Vieja Volcano, an active stratovolcano that dominates the landscape. The park is part of the Guanacaste Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and offers a unique combination of volcanic activity, lush forests, diverse wildlife, and breathtaking waterfalls.
Geothermal Activity & Volcanic Features
Rincón de la Vieja is one of the most geothermally active areas in Costa Rica. Visitors can explore bubbling mud pots, fumaroles, steam vents, and hot springs, all created by the volcanic activity beneath the surface. The Las Pailas sector, one of the park’s most popular areas, showcases these incredible natural phenomena up close.

Rincón de la Vieja National Park is a paradise for hikers and adventure lovers. The park features a variety of trails that range from easy walks to challenging hikes. Popular trails include:
Las Pailas Trail (3 km / 1.9 miles): A moderate loop that passes through volcanic features, and bubbling mud pools.
Cangreja Waterfall Trail (10 km / 6.2 miles): A more challenging hike leading to a spectacular waterfall.
